◆ Guide

Customize your Shopify checkout.
Every path, from free to full control.

Your checkout page is where the sale actually happens. Shopify lets you change more of it than most store owners realize — and locks the deepest changes behind Shopify Plus. This guide covers all three paths: the free branding editor, checkout apps, and running your own checkout layer. Every Shopify claim was checked against Shopify's own docs on September 3, 2026, with sources at the bottom.

01 / On any plan

What you can customize on every Shopify plan.

Every Shopify store — Basic, Grow, or Advanced — gets the checkout and accounts editor. It handles the branding layer: logo, colors, fonts, and layout. No app, no code, no Plus.1 Here's the whole process:

  1. Open your checkout settings. In the Shopify admin, go to Settings → Checkout.
  2. Open the checkout editor. Under Configurations, click Customize next to your checkout configuration. The checkout and accounts editor opens — click the settings icon to see the style options.
  3. Add your logo. Upload it, then set its width and left, center, or right alignment.
  4. Set your colors. The editor exposes the header background and accent, the main content area, form fields, buttons, accents, and the order summary. You can also give the order summary a background color or image.1
  5. Choose your fonts. Pick heading and body typefaces from Shopify's available fonts.
  6. Pick a layout. Choose between one-page and three-page checkout.1
  7. Save and test. Run a real test order. Colors that look fine in the editor can fail against your product photography in the order summary.

That's the honest ceiling of the free tier: it's a paint job. A good one — a checkout that matches your brand converts better than a generic one — but the structure, the fields, and the flow of the page are still Shopify's.

02 / With apps

What checkout apps and extensions can add.

The next layer up is Shopify's checkout UI extensions — the system that replaced old-style checkout scripts. Apps built on it can add real functionality: product offers before and after purchase, custom banners and fields, header and footer content, address autocomplete, and client-side validation.2

You install these as apps from the Shopify App Store (or build your own), then position their blocks in the same checkout editor from section 01. The important nuance is where those blocks are allowed to go:

So on a standard plan, apps get you upsell offers after the purchase and branding before it — but the checkout form your customer actually fills out stays stock.

What about checkout.liquid? If you've read older tutorials that edit checkout.liquid directly — that era is over. It was only ever available to Shopify Plus merchants, and Shopify turned it off for the information, shipping, and payment pages on August 13, 2024. Stores still using it for Thank you and Order status pages must move to checkout extensions; the associated script tags were sunset for Plus stores on August 28, 2025, and sunset for non-Plus stores on August 26, 2026.4,5 Everything now goes through checkout extensibility.
03 / The Plus tier

What's locked behind Shopify Plus.

Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise tier, and deep checkout customization is one of its headline features. On Plus you get:

The price: Shopify publishes Plus at $2,300 USD/month on a 3-year term, or starting at $2,500/month on a 1-year term, with a variable platform fee for more complex business structures.6,7 For the brands it's built for — high-volume, multi-store, enterprise operations — that can be a fair trade. Plus is a lot more than checkout customization.

But if checkout control is the specific thing you're after, the math is stark: $27,600 a year, minimum, on a multi-year commitment. If you're not otherwise an enterprise operation, you're buying an enterprise plan for one feature.

04 / The third path

Keep your Shopify store.
Run your own checkout.

There's a third option that most guides skip: keep Shopify as your storefront and catalog, and put your own checkout layer in front of the payment step. This is what Admoji does.

Your customers browse the same Shopify storefront. When they check out, they land on an Admoji checkout running on your own domain — like checkout.yourdomain.com — while every product, order, and customer syncs with Shopify in real time. Add a product in Shopify and it's instantly in Admoji.8

Because the checkout is yours, the customization question disappears. Nothing is gated by plan tier:

Pricing is published: $79/mo + 0.35% of volume on the Launch plan, no long-term contracts, with a 14-day free trial and no credit card required.8 At $250k/month in sales that works out to $954/mo — against $2,300/mo minimum for Plus, before you've sold anything.

To be clear about the trade-off: this is a different architecture, not a Shopify setting. You're adding a second system that syncs with your store. If all you want is a logo and brand colors, section 01 is free and takes ten minutes. The third path is for stores that want what Plus offers the checkout — structural control, upsells in the flow, their own processing — without the enterprise plan around it.

06 / FAQ

Common questions.

Can I customize my Shopify checkout without Shopify Plus?
Yes, within limits. Every plan can change the logo, colors, fonts, and one-page vs. three-page layout through the checkout and accounts editor (Settings → Checkout), and apps can add content to the Thank you and Order status pages. Extensions inside the information, shipping, and payment steps are Plus-only.
How much does Shopify Plus cost?
Per Shopify's published pricing, observed September 3, 2026: from $2,300 USD/month on a 3-year term, or starting at $2,500/month on a 1-year term, with a variable platform fee for more complex business structures. That's $27,600+ per year at the 3-year rate.
Can I add upsells to my Shopify checkout?
Yes. Checkout apps built on Shopify's UI extensions can add product offers before and after purchase, and post-purchase pages are extensible on standard plans — that's where most Shopify upsell apps live. Offers inside the checkout steps themselves require Plus. The alternative is a checkout layer like Admoji, which includes one-click upsells in the purchase flow at $79/mo + 0.35% of volume.
What's the cheapest way to get full control of my checkout?
Inside Shopify, full checkout-step customization comes with Plus at $2,300+/mo on a multi-year term. The lower-cost route is your own checkout layer alongside the Shopify storefront: Admoji runs a fully custom checkout on your own domain, with one-click upsells, and your own merchant account, at $79/mo + 0.35% — and you can try it free for 14 days. See how it compares to other checkout platforms like Checkout Champ and Sticky.io.
